I’ve been considering quite a bit about video games recently. Effectively… if “considering” is the appropriate phrase for this.
However it’s not simply foolish cartoons. It’s as a result of my new e book is all about mathematical video games.
It’s a pleasant e book. A yellow e book. A tall e book. In brief: a Massive Chook form of e book. It arrives on April fifth, and it’s now yours to preorder:

I devoted two back-breaking years to researching this factor. At occasions, I feared I’d not make it. How might I face up to so many nice diversions? So many hidden gems, every taking a minute to study and a lifetime to grasp? Such countless hours of thought-provoking enjoyable, requiring solely supplies you have already got at house? It was week after week after week of relentless, agonizing enjoyment. The soul is simply so sturdy.
However I persevered. From over a thousand candidates, I emerged with a number of dozen of the best mathematical video games that people have but devised.
They arrive from Japanese schoolyards, Parisian universities, and Argentine puzzle magazines.
They arrive from devoted educators, shameless self-promoters, and humble hobbyists.
They arrive from yours actually and trues yoursly.
Better of all, every recreation doubles as a contemporary lesson in how play brings out the perfect in human thought.
The early evaluations are already making me blush:
- Hyperbole and a Half‘s Allie Brosh mentioned “I’m loving this” and fondly in contrast it to “a capsule pocket for math.”
- Mindscape‘s Sean Carroll mentioned it “reveals the place the enjoyable [of math] has been lurking all alongside.”
- Stanford’s Jo Boaler known as it “an exquisite mixture of knowledgeable, humorous, and inventive” and mentioned “I’ll carry this with me in every single place, and my mathematical considering shall be higher due to it.”
- My two-year-old Casey, upon first seeing it, dubbed it “my e book.” She added: “I wrote this e book,” after which, pointing to the quilt: “I draw this.”
Excessive reward certainly. That is my third e book (Casey’s first), and I do know I all the time say this, however I actually suppose it’s my greatest one but.
You may preorder in all the same old locations, however I’m particularly enthusiastic about the deluxe package deal on Kickstarter: your preordered copy will come signed (by me; alas, Ernő Rubik was unavailable), together with a plethora of bonus playing cards, and the likelihood to win a brand new recreation designed in your honor.
(The Kickstarter is U.S.-only, by the way in which; my apologies to people elsewhere.)

I might provide the standard spiel right here: how preorders rely towards first-week gross sales, that are a e book’s lifeblood, which makes them an writer’s lifeblood, which is sort of sufficient to attenuate the creepiness of the phrase “lifeblood.” However I’ll spare you that. Sure, my profession (and Casey’s pineapple price range) require me to promote books. However don’t purchase this one for me. (I have already got a replica.) Purchase it for your self. Purchase it for a good friend, a game-playing companion, a scholar, a trainer. Purchase it for somebody who loves math, somebody who loves video games, somebody who loves Massive Chook. Heck, purchase a replica for Massive Chook himself.
Anyway, thanks for checking it out. I’ll be again to precise weblog posts quickly, I promise. And one final time, right here’s the Kickstarter!
